Mordheiming: roofing

I think this is probably going to be the last update about this building for a while. A few reasons:

-it’s been keeping me busy for a while now. I need fresh eyes on it.

-I’ve finished the detailing of the outside (added dents, cracks, bits …) and the roofing

-Christmas holidays which means I will take a bit of break from the hobby.

There’s still some work to do on it though. I still need to add furniture and rubble on top and of course painting it. I just started to put some bases on it but I need to restock my scenery paint. I’m using the “Crafter’s Acrylic” range from DecoArt: real cheap and available down the road. I think I’ll go for something warmer than what is on now but that’s for 2011…

Hello Cathy

I just ordered that miniature from Maow Miniatures. It’s just been released and looks great. It’s got a real Hasslefree juvenile range feel about it which I love. 3.5 Euros so can’t really argue with the price.
Really looking forward to paint this one!

3.5 Euros me semble plus qu’honnête.
Je languis de la peindre.

Mordheiming: more of the same

I spent more time this week on the town hall building than on anything else. At first, it probably doesn’t look like there has been lots of progress but I actually did quite a lot on it. The inside is now well advanced. I still need to add some details then it will be time to furnish it a bit and add more rubble. For the furniture, it’s going to have to wait as I’m planning on sculpting most of them: tables, chairs, benches should be enough for this one. I also printed some old medieval paintings to that scale to add some more drama.

I wanted to have the roof started for that update but it’s just taking too long or I’m too slow: I’m going for the first one but I’m biased. I did manage the two towers which I’m quite happy about since I didn’t have a clue on how to do them. The tiling is going to be time consuming as well which is why I have been looking at those moulds from Hirst Arts or maybe making mine.

I’m going to try to do as much as I can on this one before Christmas and I’ll post an update at the end of this week which will probably be the last update of the wear 2010 due to Christmas and maybe to some “Cataclysm”…told you I wouldn’t have the mental strength to resist that!!!!

Mordheiming: town hall

I used quite a fair amount of the time stuck inside because of the snow to make some progress on my Mordheim project. Evolution seems slow and at that pace it will only be finished for Salute 2020…Ok, slight exaggeration but that’s my Marseille streak. If things seem to go slowly it’s partially because I make moulds of most items I’m using to save me time for future needs and partially because I’m trying to do lots of details and create as many as I can.

The town hall is the first building and is still quite a long way from completion. A lot of the details come from “The Chapel” bits box; I’ve tweaked most of them to try to make the building look unique rather than another GW scenery.

Being designed for Mordheim, it does mean that I will need to pay great attention to the inside of the buildings since they are all going to be partially ruined therefore making the inside visible.

The picture next is what inspired me.Hopefully the next update will show the design of the inside and maybe the roof.

Irregular competition + wip

A quick painting update…I entered that guy in the Irregular competition for December. It’s a miniature from Foundry I believe I got in an old west set a while ago from EBay. I had to strip it before painting it which I really hate to do. I never seem to be able to get rid of everything which means some areas look really rough.

Anyway, overall I think it is decent tabletop standard but probably very light for competition. The competition required an historical mini between 15 and 40 mm and those old west guys were all that I had fitting in there. It gave me a chance to practice wood grain which worked ok and to use some of the slates I got from work for the base. I initially wanted to do a bigger diorama involving cactuses but just didn’t have time.

The second picture is also for a competition: the Heroes 2010. The challenge is to paint an old Grenadier miniature which is handy because I’ve got lots of them. Again I had to strip the dwarf badly; I painted it 20 years ago and broke his feet while removing the base. It’s been really messy. I greenstuffed new feet, a quick robe and changed some details: weapons + gems. I’m going to try to do some nice work on it as the miniature is not the most graceful, just very old school. Deadline is beginning of January so I can take my time.

I’ve been Mordheiming heavily this week, I’ll update tomorrow.

A quick thank to whoever bought 2 of my listed items, the skull base being my first sale (really made my day)!!!

Scenery stuff

A quick painting update of items I did last week end. Those are a few things I will be listing shortly on EBay. I sculpted them a while ago but I’ve been late painting them (except for the lion head from Hirst Art).
I will use them for my Mordheim board; the double door was done with the town hall entrance in mind. The fountain and bookcase should come quite handy as well.

Chess board tiles

I’ve wondering for a while now about what to do for a chess board for my Mandarin set (see older posts for the set). I’m not quite decided on the framing and what kind of type of wood I should be using but I have made some progress on the tiles. I have sculpted 2 plains tiles (40x40mm) and 2 with some sorts of dragons. I made mould of those and I’m now practicing the painting. The idea is to have one dark set and one clear one. I find it much easier to do clear ones and so far I’m very unhappy with the darker ones. I don’t know how I will be using the tiles with dragons as well or if I should be using them at all. As the chess pieces are quite full on China already maybe it’s a better idea to have plain tiles; plus the dragons don’t look that great.
Anyway, I still need to work out how I’m going to paint these as the results so far are quite unconvincing.

Verdigris

Having a look at my original sketching of my Mordheim board, I realised that there would be a lot of rocks, bricks and stones involved. I’ve been looking since then at different ways to paint them to avoid a sea of dull grey. They can actually take a lot of colours; so far my favourite is Kommando Kaki from GW or stone grey from Vallejo. I think I’ll keep the classic dull grey for the floors/pavements and try to sexy up anything else.

I have also been experimenting with metal statues (see picture). I used the tutorials from the “Mad ponies” website as I love his painting. I used Verdigris glaze from Vallejo on gold and copper. It’s quite an understated verdigris effect but I do like it. I still need to work on it, play with inks and highlights.

Mordheiming

I think I’m going to stick with that title for all my updates regarding my Mordheim project. Today, I finished the archway for the town hall. The good thing is that I have got all of this in moulds now so it should speed up further needs for arches/pillars on next buildings. I have finished the double door and I am casting some citadels mini that I’m going to use as statue for the same building. I wanted the town hall front to be quite imposing and a bit over the top so I am not going to bypass details. I will do another update tomorrow for painted stuff.

Zulu bargain

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

Seneca.

I regularly go hunting in my local charity shops in the hope of finding the rare/precious treasure everybody else missed. More often than not, I end up finding nothing.
Today, I’m quite pleased; I have found that little fella (see pictures): 120mm high, very nicely sculpted, dreadful paintjob. I’m going to have to strip it but that shouldn’t be too difficult. Probably a bit of conversion needed as the spear is broken and there is a tiny damage on the shield. The thing cost me £3.20 which is a bargain by any standard. The only frustrating thing is that I can’t find any information about the maker, only those writings on the base: AS/A28 Copyright 1987.

Anybody’s got any idea?

Horns of a dilemma

Will I have the mental strength to resist this? Really want to try it but it’s going to take so much time off the hobby….

The Wych Cross circular saw massacre

Sort of a painting update as I had an extremely frustrating week regarding mould making/casting. I think I’m making all the mistakes that you can possibly make. I thought I had read enough about it but there is still lot to learn. The positives are that I’m slowly finding solutions to problems.

Anyway, I managed to finish Sebastian from the Mc Mourning set. I wanted to practice blood splatters and chipped metal. I’m quite happy with the blood; it was actually extremely easy (just painted with an ink). Just noticed while editing the picture that I really need to tidy up his mouth. The chipped metal is not quite as obvious but it’s there. I probably should paint some 40K to practice that….Not much more to add about it, it’s just another really nice miniature from Wyrd.

EBay listing frenzy

I’ve just been listing some more items; please feel free to have a look. I’m not planning on getting rich with those, I’m just doing this to try to finance more mould making for the items I will be sculpting. It’s great fun playing with RTV Silicone but it’s damn expensive (I know I’m complaining again). More later…

A bientôt.

Selling bases

I’ve just put up some bases for sale on EBay. I do find the insertions fees expensive considering the prices of the items but hey...I guess it’ll soon turn out to be cheaper to turn my account into an EBay shop.

Anyway, you’re all welcome to have a look at it by using the widget on the right (I swear I have nothing to do with the shoes)!!!

Overcooking Sculpey

A quick update as I’ve been busy working on lots of different things but nothing exciting to show. I sculpted a few scenery items: double door, bookcase and some kind of a beam with an animal head. I really messed up the double door by overcooking it which ended with the item been completely warped. I had to break it, straighten it on a piece of board and fill the gaps with green stuff: a real pain.

I’ve also started to paint scenery elements I will soon be selling on EBay. More on that later….

A suivre…

Graou!!!

Well, that’s pretty much how I feel!!! The results for the Wyrd Rotten Harvest VI are in and I’ve done well. My necromancer (see older posts) finished 2nd in the “Witches and Warlocks” category and won top spot for the best base in show!!! Best pleased with it and looking forward to browse the Wyrd online shop!!!

Sunday 7 November 2010

Next victims, WIP and other good news…

Well, to start with the good news, I finished 4th on the “Pulp City Contest” with my Vigilante miniature (the superhero with trainers, see older posts). Quite pleased with that, so I’ll be expecting some mail with a few goodies.

Fairly free this month to paint what I want since I decided not to run with a few of the competitions around in November such as the “Smog” and “Kingdom Of Death” contests. I like “KOD” miniatures but they are way too expensive and it’s pretty much the same thing with the Smog minis although I do want to get some of them…but not just now.

I’ll be painting the old west guy for the Irregular competition. I really struggled to find an historical miniature under 54mm I fancied online, so I just went through my old stock and found that mini from Foundry.
I had “Sebastian” from Wyrd hanging around so I’ll do him. It is a great mini and I want to practice blood spatters (not too often you say that) so he’ll be perfect.

I’ve been busy sculpting this week; I did 2 fountains and 1 column. The big fountain will centre my town hall square for my Mordheim project. The other bits will be used for some of the buildings on that square too. I have also been practicing sculpting small details such as animal faces, bottles, jugs...etc.

Really hard but I’m getting better !!!

Halloween entries

I’ve finally posted my 2 entries for the Wyrd Miniature Painting Contest and the Arcane Competition. The necromancer was for the Wyrd competition, quite pleased with it although a few rough spots on the dress. I really went Halloween on his ass.

I had already written something about it so no much more to add…Ah yes, brilliant Miniature from Maow!!!!

The second one is the Chaos Witch from Freebooter. Not as pleased with it, overall I think it’s ok but a few rough patches on the skin. I got fed trying to get it right, so I gave up….I think Ms Willett spotted the problem when she said: “why did you paint a clown face on her?”….

Anyway, it’s a learning experience. I think I overloaded me last month with painting competitions, I don’t think I’ll do that anytime soon. So stay tune for more Sculpting updates!!!!

Pandemic!

Vaguely hobby related but I thought I would mention it anyway since it’s that good! I’ve been playing Pandemic this week-end with Ms Willetts and her sister. I did try to force a game of Space Hulk instead but 2 girls against 1 space marine win, I didn’t really mind since I hadn’t played it in a while.
I’m not going to do a review of the game; there are probably good ones out there. In a nutshell, 4 viruses are spreading and you have to find cure to win the game. What’s really specific about this game is that you do not play against the other players but with them, each player having a different role and its own abilities.
We only manage to win once though….good fun anyway.
Highly recommend it!!!

Mordheim project

Finally putting on paper a project that I have been thinking about for quite a while now. I want to craft my own Mordheim table!
So far I have sketched the outline of the project, done some research and lots of thinking. This is a fairly big project, my biggest project to date. I don’t have a deadline but if progress goes as planned I am aiming at a finished table for Salute 2013: so a bit more than 2 years from now. I was initially thinking about Salute 2012 but it would require working pretty much full-time on it (full-time of my Hobby time that is…) and I don’t intend to do that. I might have a playable good looking board for Salute 2012 but I think I would rather wait for the finished product but we’ll have to see.

I decided to build it into squares to avoid the problems I had with my Malifaux Table. Here is a picture of the board:

The problems I had and still have with this one are:
- Storage, it needs its own area in the house, no modules
- Working on it was awkward at times
- Transport
This is a much smaller table but I have learnt a lot from it.

Back to my Mordheim project, this is much bigger and I attend to do a good job on it. Also, as I have already said, I intend to do Salute with it, so it’s going to have to be up there standard wise. I’ve sketched 9 squares, each square will be 60cmx60cm. Difficult to see on my quick sketch but the squares/areas will be divided as follows:

A1/ Castle, partially ruined (there will be lots of ruins everywhere for playability) on a hill, caves at the base of the hill, outpost at the base as well

A2/ Town square, fountain at the centre, inn, various houses: see picture for inspiration (Next picture comes from kobblestone Miniatures)

A3/ Craftsmen terrace, blacksmith, factory, maybe a farm even: another picture for inspiration.

B1/ B area will cut in half by a long canal. For B1 the canal will form a loop around what will be the jail. I’m thinking of doing really playable modules in this one such as being able to move roofs and levels. I think the jail thing will go well with that. I’ll probably make a “clin d’oeil” at “the prison” of World of Warcraft. It should be quite an intricate one.

B2/ Canal again, big bridge, overlooking tower, houses, and sewers bits…

B3/ Another craftsmen area, wind mill, lumber camp, canal slightly turning into a river, rocks, boat…

C1/ Cemetery area, ruined chapel, Wild Park, pond, creepy houses….yep, the spooky corner.

C2/ Merchant district, renaissance inspired, hexagon, clock tower, bank, inn…pictures for inspiration

C3/ Execution square, barracks and catacombs…it should be another spooky one.

Here’s a picture that got me really inspired and is quite a good idea of where I’m going with this:

I’ll be working on one square at a time which will be easier than tackling the whole thing. I think the first one will be A2 (town square). I will start from next week working on the fountain, quite a lot of sculpting and doors/windows for the buildings.

I’ll try to make as many updates as possible…

Mise a jour à suivre…

Pulp City Contest 2010

It’s getting to the end of the month so it’s about time to start posting some finished work. The first one is that miniature called “Vigilantes” from Pulp city. It’s been great fun to paint it, especially those trainers (joking).

No a great deal to say about it: Superhero, W40 type scenery, colour scheme flashy pants and tabard skull like its info card.

Quite pleased with it overall.
