Fly you fools!

One of my guilty pleasures: the Lol cats!!!

I’ve got to say this is one of best I’ve seen in ages and ”Lord of the rings” enough related to feature here!!!

The Smell of Good and Evil

“In most pen and paper fantasy RPGs, three of the primary attributes that you must choose for your character are race, class, and alignment. Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s RPG scent series was designed to emulate the character creation process, and are meant to be layered in order to create a character concept. In short: you layer your class, race, and the two fragrances that compose your alignment to construct your character scent”.

That’s a quote from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab about their RPG inspired perfumes.
You can find everything about it here:

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab

or for the perfume page:

The RPG Series

A small selection of the ones I liked:

RACE

ELF: Pale golden musk, honeycomb, amber, parma violet, hawthorne bark, aspen leaf, forest lily, life everlasting, white moss, and a hint of wild berry.
HALFLING: Porridge, kukui nuts, and pastry crumbs.
ORC: Field grey courgette musk, roughly cured leather, and vetiver.

CLASSES

MAGE: All mystique and thrumming power: gurjum balsam, Sumatran dragon's blood resin, olibanum, galangal, oleo gum resin, and frankincense.
RANGER: Untamed wilderness: buckskin accord with Terebinth pine, Russian birch, black ironwood, elder bark, hay, armoise, juniper, patchouli, galangal root, Spanish moss, and cabreuva.
ROGUE: Soft, well-worn black leather, hemp, and rosin.

ALIGNMENT

NEUTRAL: A flawless skin musk.
GOOD: Shimmering celestial musk with vanilla, white honey, acacia, and sugar cane.
EVIL: Smouldering opium tar, tobacco absolute, green tea, black plum, kush, ambergris accord, ambrette seed, and costus root.

Paint log: Layla bint suraya bint javaira

I’ve not updated for a while about what I’m doing so here we go. I just started painted this mini (the name is in the title) from Hell Dorado. I’ve to say this is one of my all-time favourite miniatures. The sculpt is beautiful, very elegant, I love the Arabic/feminine/cartoonish style and I can’t remember seeing a more beautiful horse.
I’m going to try to keep the studio paint colours. It’s going to be a great practice at whites: greenish/jade creamy white for the robes and grey white for the horse. I’m thinking of sculpting an Egyptian inspired base for it, we’ll see…

They came... They saw... They panicked...

No recent update of what I’m currently working on but I have been real busy working on my houses project. I’ll update on that when I’m done with it and hopefully ready to have the first ones on sale. In the meantime, I thought I’ll share something that really made me laugh. The pictures come from an artist called Aled Lewis, he called the series “Toy Stories”. There are some real little gems in there.

Although this is not related in any way with him, it really made me think about that Belgium/French movie called “A town called panic” from 2009. If you can, do watch it as it’s quite brilliant, weird and hobby sort of related. I’ll just put the link of the official website as it’s almost impossible to describe. That’s the storyline from IMDB:

Animated plastic toys like Cowboy, Indian and Horse have problems, too. Cowboy and Indian's plan to surprise Horse with a homemade birthday gift backfires when they destroy his house instead. Surreal adventures take over as the trio travel to the centre of the earth, trek across frozen tundra and discover a parallel underwater universe where pointy-headed (and dishonest!) creatures live. With panic a permanent feature of life in this papier mâché town, will Horse and his girlfriend ever be alone?

See what I mean?

http://www.paniqueauvillage.com/

Mark Newman Sculpture

I just stumbled on this artist on Deviant Art called Mark Newman. I found his work quite impressive not too far off miniature work. A lot of his sculptures are 2/3 real life size and he has been doing lots of projects for Cinema, drawings and painting. His Deviant Art gallery speaks for itself, his website a bit less interesting though:

http://marknewman.deviantart.com/gallery/

http://www.marknewmansculpture.com/

Inglorious Barbies

I just watched “Marwencol”, a documentary by Jeff Malmberg about the work and life of Mark Hogancamp. At some point, a character in the movie says that Mark’s work is so amazing that he had to share it. I agree with that, particularly sharing it with people reading that blog who will be particularly interested in the hobby side of the documentary.

Marwencol is a real place, even if it exists mostly in the imagination of Mark Hogancamp. The fictional Belgian World War II town was born after the artist nearly died 10 years ago, beaten by five men who attacked the Kingston, N.Y., resident at a local bar. When he awoke from a coma nine days later, he recalled, "All the connections were broken." A talented illustrator who also was, in his words, "a half-gallon a day drunk," Mr. Hogancamp lost his drawing skills, much of his memory and his thirst for booze. But then he picked up an old Pentax K-1000 camera, loaded it with 35mm film he could buy at a store two blocks from his home, and started building his own little world, using scrap wood left behind at a construction site. Mark populates the town he dubs "Marwencol" with dolls representing his friends and family and creates life-like photographs detailing the town's many relationships and dramas.

Playing in the town and photographing the action helps Mark to recover his hand-eye coordination and deal with the psychic wounds of the attack. When Mark and his photographs are discovered, a prestigious New York gallery sets up an art show. Suddenly Mark's homemade therapy is deemed "art", forcing him to choose between the safety of his fantasy life in Marwencol and the real world that he's avoided since the attack.

That's the trailer:

http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3220441369/

Marwencol's galery:
http://www.marwencol.com/gallery/

Salute frenzy 2011

That was a hell of a busy day and as good as expected. I didn’t take as many pictures as I did last year, probably because I did a lot more shopping. I managed to stick to the budget despite the debit card burning in the pocket ( I had this thing in my head of Frodo and the ring). I bought Uncle Meat from JAG; it was nice to be able to speak to him. I got a fair few amount of Gobelins from Freebooter (I absolutely love them). I almost completed my collection of Hell Dorado stuff as a lot of it was massively discounted. I got a great BloodBowl team from Hasslefree, that’s the woman team. I’m planning to paint those for Ms Willett as I couldn’t go to Salute without buying something for her, that’s how nice I am^^. I also got a few random minis from Joek, Banelords and a selection of Silflor.

Of course it wasn’t all about the shopping. The tables and demo games were really cool although I seem to remember it was slightly better last year, maybe it’s just my memory. For me the best table was the tiny board from the guys at Eden Game. I just loved the theme: an old dilapidated fairground; I can’t remember seeing anything like this ever. Details and execution were fantastic however my pictures are rubbish and don’t do it justice.

There was also a table with lots of trenches. I believe it was First World War Turkish and Australians units but I could be wrong (2nd picture). The table was massive and I can’t imagine how many hours of work it took.

Overall it was a brilliant day, it was my friend Fred's first Salute and I think he found it hard going to sleep the following night. I have to mention the free mini as well which is quite good and a free bag from KR Multicase was pretty nice too.

Hitech Miniatures

I just received that puppy in the post and I’m pretty impressed by it. This was the price for winning the Irregular Painting Competition. I had never heard of those guys so I thought I’d give them a big thumb up.

Now, this is really not my favourite style of miniatures but I’m sure there are lots of people out there who are quite keen on the Space Marine 40K thing. They do have an interesting range of accessories and bases plus the 28mm and 54mm miniatures. The one I’ve got is a 54mm mini, looks enormous especially when you’re not familiar at all with that scale. It’s really nicely detailed and superbly cast in resin. Gruesome base too!

That’s their website, although I don’t have a clue where they’re from (apart from having to pay in Euros):

http://hitechminiatures.com/#

Heyu + New Door

I’ve managed a bit of painting last week end on top of finishing sculpting a few items for my housing project. With Salute coming up this week end and a friend visiting for that matter, I don’t think I’ll be able to do much in the next few days.

I finally finished Heyu (from Hasslefree) and he has now officially become my new mascot. By that I mean, I’ll be using him as a scale reference on the items I’m displaying. That’s as long as I don’t get fed up with him. I really enjoyed painting this one, love gnomes/dwarfs characters, civilian, no metal/heavy weapons, superb sculpt, his robe was just so enjoyable to paint, great stuff. I didn’t keep him on its original base but on one of mine 30 mm laboratories base (Marketing!!!). Well, it’s not marketing really, I just find the 20mm bases ridiculously to small, I cannot stand the whole GW making their characters bigger and bigger over the years and still keeping the very same bases where you end up with feet sticking out. /rant off.

I also sculpted and painted a new door, up for sale now on EBay. I’ll be using it for my houses. I’m planning of releasing on sale the first house pretty soon too. I just need to tweak a few things around. Probably a couple of weeks after Salute.

Really excited about this week end, can’t wait!!!

/mode rallage off.

Frankenstein

Mrs. Willett regularly tries to tease me out of my den to go to the theatre and found something that works well: a theme I like. So we went today to watch “Frankenstein” at the National (sorry but only people in London area might be remotely interested by this). This is not a proper review as I hardly ever go to the theatre and other people might have a more relevant opinion than mine but I liked it a lot so I thought I‘d talk about it.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is adapted for the stage by Nick Dear and realised by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire and all that…). The creature and Dr. Frankenstein are played both by Jonny Lee Miller (the baddy in Dexter last season) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock…). They play it twice a day and swap roles. Apparently, we were quite lucky as Jonny Lee Miller was the creature when we were there and he’s better at it according to most critics.

As I said, I hadn’t been to the theatre in ages and was amazed at the scenes when we walked in. There was a massive bell hanging on the ceiling over our heads being rang by an actor while we were waiting: deafening. The stage was amazing too with a ceiling packed with old light bulbs of all kind of sizes, literally hundreds of them, providing some really cool lightning and giving the impression of an almost Steam punk time.

From there, I was expecting a real Gothic Horror feast. I was to be disappointed. That Frankenstein is really not sticking to the classic version particularly concerning the creature. I won’t tell what happens but he basically escapes from his master very early in the play to find refuge at some old blind guy house who is going to look after him for a year. He is going to teach him to read, to speak, to become human. The thing is: this creature is extremely clever and 30mns in the play can quote Plutarch, discuss existentialist issues and ask himself questions about what love is…Yep, really. Murdering his old master, he then decides to go back to Geneva, find his maker and ask him to create a fiancée for him so he can go and live happily ever after in Argentina…Yep, really.

I’m not going to tell the whole plot but as I said this is a very different Frankenstein, a more philosophical play with quite a lot of humour as well. The actors are brilliant, really brilliant, as this is a high budget play, the scenery is quite unbelievable only to be let down by some very disappointing music at times.

So despite being starved of any gory gothic Victorian horror and irritated at times by the over production, I can only recommend it as this is a very enjoyable play. Good luck finding tickets as this is apparently sold out but that’s probably do-able…

Paper Work

I remember seeing a thread on Wamp about paper scenery so I thought I would share that link. It’s not a material I like to use at all for scenery but some people do. Right now, I’m thinking about Paul from "Paul's Bods" and his use of toilet paper for making a cloak on a miniature. So I guess it’s all about experimenting and thinking outside the box.

However, this group of people go all the way though when it comes to paper. From showbiz stars to factory workers, they create entire sets. It’s a collaborative effort of Russian designers called alexei lyapunov and lena ehrlich working under the pseudo “People too”.

As usual I’m just showing a selection of my favourites but you can check their website here:

http://peopletoo.ru/

Medieval Fantasy house update

So that was a bit of a trial painting and I would appreciate some feedback on it. I’m not fishing for compliments, I’m planning on selling those eventually so I would like to know what people objectively think of it. Now please bear in mind that this is not a GD entry (or Crystal Brush following the trend) and I don’t have time to blend each tile individually. I was trying to achieve a good solid tabletop standard, fairytale like (hence the bright colours) as this is rather more fantasy medieval than realistic medieval. I do apologize again for the not so great pictures but I think you should still be able to judge the painting.

As far as the building goes, I’m not going to change much, just the thickness of windows. Regarding the painting, I will base coat it in black to avoid the silly white dots under the tiles. I think I’ll drop the gold on the windows, maybe a couple of more highlights on the walls and tiles but that’s pretty much it. The wood looks dull on the pictures but it’s actually quite alright in the “flesh”.

Painting log update

I finished the human team last week end. I did a bit of a quick job, decent table top standard I think. They’re not the greatest miniatures to be honest; I had a lot more fun painting the orcs. I just need to paint a few balls and it’s all ready for action.

Next, besides the scenery stuff, is that lovely little miniature from Hasslefree called Heyu, wizard apprentice puffing and carrying a huge pile of books. I’m planning on using him as a reference miniature for my scenery stuff to give an idea of the scale, so I have to do a good job on this one.

Ps: I apologize for the crappy pictures.

Japanese Town House + new door

A quick update about what I’m selling at the moment.

First is an old medieval Japanese town house I did a while ago. I intended to use it for gaming but I’m not going to so I thought it might be of some use for other gamers. It’s inspired from a building I saw on Oshiro ModelTerrain. It comes as it’s on the picture, painted and all that. I’ve got more pictures available and I would ship internationally, it’s on the EBay link if you’re interested.

And second is a single medieval door cast in resin supplied unpainted. That’s in the EBay thingy too. As Ray Roussel would say: “it would take quite a bit of battering before it falls through…”

Irregular Magazine out now !!!

Pretty quick post to remember to everybody that Irregular Magazine Spring 2011 is out now for downloading. A slightly glowing look on my face as I won the painting competition for this quarter with my “Jenny and her trusty Turtle” diorama. All about it on page 4…

They don’t mention any new painting competition for the next edition so I don’t know if there will be one, which would be a shame.
Anyway, the magazine is well worth a look with great Art work as usual and brilliant reviews and stuff.

If you didn’t know already you can find it here:

http://irregularmagazine.com/
