Chaos Dwarf Dreadquake Mortar

I kept the best and biggest piece of this Chaos Dwarf commission for the end and here it is. It’s a pretty big thing, I mean seriously big. The base is 190x75mm and is now available from the website here. It might interest people who would want to tackle this set as it’s almost impossible to find anything that big and it does not come with a base: crazy.
Anyway, that’s it for marketing. The miniature set itself was a joy to paint, lots of metal again but that’s been the theme of this commission. The miniatures on the machine are awesome, real nice characters.  I include the CMON link if you fancy. Not much to add as I did quite a few WIP posts on this one.
Hope you like it.

Space Hulk – Genestealers (1)

Here we go, the first post of a probably long series. This is the first group of 3 genestealers painted; I’ll try to keep them coming in groups. I changed the colour scheme from the previous set, green + blue instead of a more “classic” purple+ blue. Although Sci-fi is really not my forte, it’s really nice to paint creatures like that. The plastics models are excellent, really quick to prep and superbly detailed. You can really feel like your painting is better than from painting less well detailed models such as the “Mansion of madness” set. I did put magnets in first this time (thanks Tsar1701^^), it’s working really well.

Next up, lots more genestealers…

Chaos Dwarf Daemonsmiths

This is probably the penultimate post on chaos dwarf as I’m nearing completion of this massive commission. The last one will be about the dread quake, probably within the week as it’s nearly finished. I had this mini-set to paint and partly painted it while I was doing the crew of the dread quake. They’re some great minis from Forgeworld, hardly any preparation work to do, lots of details. I mean lots of details, a bit of a shock after painting the minis from “Mansions of Madness” which were very plain. Every corner or part of the mini has something detailed, textured. It does make for very busy miniatures which is what some people don’t like about them but it’s fab for painting. It’s a set of 3 minis, command type for £18.00 which isn’t too bad considering the manufacturer.
If you like Chaos dwarf, you should definitely look into them.

Space Hulk – Second Round

Here we go, my current board game painting project: Space Hulk. I already painted a set when I first got it but I exchanged it against some money and the unpainted set. Since I already done one, I’ve been in no rush to redo it but playing the game has been itching a bit. I’ve got very fond memories playing the first edition back then, love it. On top of that, the minis are pretty outstanding.
The pictures displayed on that post show the job I did the first time. I definitely can do better but again it’s going to be quick tabletop paintjob as they are for playing and been handled a lot. I think I’ll keep the marines in white as I’ve not seen many of them like that online, the red seems to be the preferred choice. However I’ve got a different idea for the tyrannids. As far as posts go, I’ll do a post every 3 tyrannids and maybe one for each marine, we’ll see. I’ll not be doing anything special about the bases as the problem is that they need 40mm bases which won’t fit in the game at all. I know that some people magnetised them on 40mm bases to be able to do both the game and 40K but I don’t do 40K so no point really.

Chaos Dwarf Dreadquake Mortar WIP (3)

A quick update on that WIP thread as I just finished the crew. I really like the one with the whip, a great chaos dwarf figure. The other 2 are pretty standard crew dwarf. So that’s it for the leaving creatures on that set, now onto the machine itself. I’ll do another post about the base too as I made a mould for it.

Mansions of Madness – Fully painted

That will be the last post of the series, only maybe a quick review of the game although that’s not really my favourite thing to do. I include 3 pictures: monsters, investigators and everybody together. It was a great pleasure to paint this box; overall the minis were very nice, especially if you like that genre. The one bad point was the material in which the minis are casted; it’s a rubbery plastic really not easy to work. The minis are painted to a decent tabletop level I think, I could have spent more time on them but a line has to be drawn, they are for playing. I think it’s going to be interesting to get them out to play and see people using them, not too sure how I’m going to carry them though. Anyway, I’m going to paint another “classic” board game next, more to come on that…

Mansions of Madness – “Ashcan” Pete

No home but the open road…The last miniature of the box is finally done. I had kept my favourite male miniature to finish on a high. It’s a typical Cthulhu group investigator almost a la Indiana Jones, a great little mini and a lot of fun to paint.
I will do a final post for this series with pictures from the 2 groups and one together.

Mansions of Madness – Sister Mary

Thy will be done…There had to be one religious nutcase so here it is: Sister Mary. I’m not mad about the mini but overall the group of investigators was pretty good. The base is from “Wyrd Miniatures” and is pretty fun.  Not tons to say about this one, a real quick job again, most of the time spent on removing mould lines..Whinge again^^.
Next and last, before final group shot, is “Ashcan Pete” the best male in the box…

Mansions of Madness – Joe Diamond

Fifty dollars per day, plus expenses…I just finished the Joe Diamond, private investigator. It’s probably the most dynamic miniature of the lot and was quite fun to paint. Not much to add on the job itself, it was a pretty quick tabletop one. I quite liked the artwork I found while looking for ideas (it’s actually the artwork in the game).
Anyway, another two to go and the box is done.
 Next up is sister Mary…

A suivre, Sœur Mary…

Mansions of Madness – Gloria Goldberg

The truth is stranger than fiction…She’s the writer/reporter character of the group. A pretty miniature although she’s not the prettiest female in the lot. I really enjoyed painting this one, particularly the cloth. Lots of evil mould lines but I’m starting to get used to them; I might change my mind on the whole “finecast” stuff. I used the same technique of under-shading again, I think I’m going to use this a lot now, see where that takes me.

Anyway, 3 more to go, next up Joe Diamond…

Mansions of Madness – Michael McGlen

No one messes with Michael McGlen…No one….Hmm; I did a bit, just a tiny bit. He is the second male character of the lot done so far. A typical gangster miniature, I think he’ll be popular with the players if only for his weapon. The mini was pretty horrendous with mould lines again but it was fixable quite quickly on this one. For the painting, I went for a completely different approach. I used the technique explained by “Kings Miniatures” which is massively different from my routine. The idea is to base and pre-shade straight away and then paint with glazes using Matt Medium (short version, feel free to read his post). For a first attempt I’m pretty pleased. You can achieve some basic blending quickly. Obviously, it needs to be worked and practised again and again but it opened a new door for me,  a bit of an epiphany…

Next up, Gloria Goldberg…

A suivre, Gloria Goldberg…

Chaos Dwarf Dreadquake Mortar WIP (2)

I wasn’t planning on doing too many posts about this one but as I took the pictures I thought I would at least share them. Since the last post about this model, I finished to prep the minis and started painting. I finished the ogre that’s carrying ammunitions. I might do a few touches here and there but it’s pretty much done. I really like painting ogres, especially nice models like this one, very simple but full of character.
I started the dwarf team as well; I might put it up too at some point…

Mansions of Madness – Kate Winthrop

On the brink of a major breakthrough…Every game of Cthulhu has its psychiatric hospital and its nurse, so here’s Kate. Although she’s depicted more as a scientific character she remains the hot nurse that every group of players will pick up, anyway I digress. The model itself is decent but a few flaws in my opinion. There are very few details, the face is very plain and the casting was horrendous. I did the best I could in the shortest time but overall it is decent tabletop I think. Her uniform is a lot whiter than it looks on the picture.

Next up, Michael McGlen, the ganster…
