Dark Sword Frog Wizard

I finished it last week end as the deadline for the competition was this Monday. Having seen the other entries in the contest, well, no chance lol…Anyway, it was a good practice at making conversions and painting, particularly the eyes as I tried different styles fir the different creatures on the diorama. I like some of them but the ones on the frog didn’t really work out.
I could have re-worked some of it and add 3-4 hours work on it but never mind, move on to the next thing...
I still love that mini though.

La figurine me plait toujours autant ceci dit.

The Chapel

I finished it yesterday. It was a good exercise in cutting plastic and overall a great set to play with. I didn’t do a base for it as I’m planning on integrating it into a larger piece of scenery in the future.
Next scenery project is a windmill, more to follow…

Thorvin The Great WIP

A quick WIP picture I took this morning while I was doing a series of pictures for other stuff. Isn’t he a handsome dwarf??? Mini from Enigma Miniatures, one of my all times favourite manufacturer. I wasn’t planning of showing a wip for so little but I had the picture so…

I’ve been using it to practice a few mix of colours I’ll be using for a whole unit later. It's actually very much inspired from the studio paintjob of that particular mini.I’m not planning on spending 24 hours on it so I’ll just finish highlights + metals, a few glazes here and there and basta. I think I’ll base it on a base from one of my sets. We’ll see…

On verra…

Tilt Shift

I’ve stumbled on this technique a couple of times now and I thought I would mention it here. The technique is called Tilt shift. You basically use tilt shift lenses which focus on a single part of the photo and blur the surrounding area to create an optical illusion of miniaturized scenery.

If you don’t have a lens like that (apparently they’re expensive) you can do that with Photoshop. I have selected a few pictures I like but I linked a flickr with plenty more + a tutorial on how to do it on Photoshop.

I tried a bit and it works well, you just need the right picture, some kind of a city landscape. I’ll try on models as well, it will probably be weird.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/tilt-shift-fakes/

http://visualphotoguide.com/tilt-shift-photoshop-tutorial-how-to-make-fake-miniature-scenes/

Dominion

I mentioned in my “gaming podcast” post that I had bought Dominion following the advice from the guys at the Dice Tower. So here it is, I had a few games at the week end with Ms Willett. I have to say it’s quite enjoyable and I’m looking forward to some more games with more people (up to 4).

Dominion is a card game published by Rio Grande Games. The game was released in 2008. It won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award in 2009.

How does it work?

The picture I took is a classic set up.Dominion is a deck-building card game in which the players compete to gather the most valuable deck of cards, representing a Kingdom. There are 3 main classes of cards:

• Victory cards, which have a Victory Point value that is tallied at the end of the game to decide the winner.

• Treasure cards (money basically)

• Kingdom cards generate effects during a player's turn, allowing that player to gain more cards, Coins, Buys, Actions, or get rid of cards, or may affect other players in the game.

What I like about it?

It’s fast paced, games last about 30mns and you feel like you’re always playing and involved in what’s going on. You play a game with a selection of 10 kingdom cards but there are a lot more to choose from which means many possibilities and lots of choice.

The Chapel Mordheimized

Although I should really be painting for the Dark Sword Competition, I decided to do the chapel instead as I really don’t have the painting Mojo at the moment. I bought this set a couple of years ago to use it as a scale template for my own buildings. It cost me £16.00 on EBay and you can’t complain about it really: lots of bits and a pretty outstanding design.

I decided to Mordheimize it as I really like “playable” buildings at the moment. I’m trying to do a pretty detailed interior, so for that I used a few bits from the box, some Hirst Arts pieces and I had to sculpt a few. At the moment the whole thing is in two pieces + floor. The paint job is not finished but one the roof is on only a small part of the house will be visible so I’m not going to detail it like mad.

Gaming Podcasts

I don’t know what you guys do during your hobby time but I like to listen to the Radio or Podcasts. Most of the Podcasts I listen to are not hobby related but the list is growing so I thought I’d review quickly the ones I listen to. Now I listen to both French and English speaking ones so I was thinking of doing 2 separate lists but I finally decided to go in preference order. The list is not that big to be halved anyway.

I would be interested to know if you guys listen to some that are not on my radar, please feel free to add them in the comment section.

The Meeples&Miniatures Podcast: If I’ve got a pile of podcasts to catch up with, this one is always the first one I would go to. This Podcast is Wargames and miniatures focused plus a big penchant for Board games which could be how I describe myself, probably why I like it so much.

The format has changed a bit since I started listening to it but from what I understand Neil Shuck (the host) now broadcasts 3 shows: 1 weekly review about new miniature releases, "The view from the veranda" where he meets Henry Hyde of Battlegames Magazine and the Meeples&Minaitures Podcast where he talks about all Wargames things with guest sometimes or specific topics such as Painting, Birmingham Boardgame convention…

Thank god, ITunes is doing the downloading for you and you don’t have to track down every episode!

One of the best things about these Podcasts is Neil Shuck's personality, he is really good at doing what he does: presenting games objectively in a fun way without taking himself seriously. Truly great Podcasting!!!

http://www.meeplesandminiatures.co.uk/

The Dice Tower: This podcast is about Board games. The hosts are Tom Vasel and Eric Summerer, both are extremely knowledgeable about games. The show is usually about 1 hour with guests and different themes. This is a brilliant, intelligent and funny show. They’ve been banging so much on Dominion that I finally cracked and bought it. They also love doing lists, top10 best games of 1997 etc…

http://www.dicetower.com/

Proxi-Jeux: This is a fairly new French Podcast; they’re currently on episode 7. The main show is a two person show with the occasional guest about gaming. They also do on the road show interviews. I’m really impressed with it. The hosts are really interesting guys and talk about a vast array of subjects. They did a podcast a couple of weeks ago about Mölkky which is a Finnish skittles game, weird stuff!

http://podcast.proxi-jeux.fr/

The D6 Generation: This one is a long one, usually about 3 hours at least. Lots of guests, topics, interviews, they do talk about everything that’s about gaming from computers to miniatures, TV shows, Board games. It’s usually pretty good but I do listen to it in sections as it’s long. It’s an English speaking one.

http://www.thed6generation.com/

Boitecast.net : This one has been around for a while but it’s new to me so I won’t comment too much except to say that what I heard so far was pretty good. It’s a Belgium podcast, mainly about Board games. The shows I listened to were interviews of games designers at a convention, really interesting stuff. Looking forward to listening to some more…

http://www.soirees-terribles.be/

Ancible-The Podcast: The Ancible is originally a digital magazine that specialises in the field of Science Fiction and fantasy wargaming. However they did their first podcast last week and introduced what they’re going to do with it. It’s in English although contains some strong Glaswegian accents. I liked the guys and what the project is, will listening to some more.

http://www.the-ancible.com/

La Radio des Jeux: sadly, this is the last year for this great French podcast. It would normally be higher on the list but because they're stopping this month I decided to put it last on the list. The content is still available but I don’t know for how long. The show was about 2 hours long and run by people from the gaming industry. Real shame as it was really good!

http://www.laradiodesjeux.fr/

Vraiment dommage :(.

A few special mentions:

Precinctomega
is a pretty good podcast but seems to have gone off the boil in recent months. It is a one man show podcast fairly focused on minis, everything I've heard so far has been pretty good and well worth listening to. I hope he’s going to get his mojo back.

http://www.precinctomega.co.uk/

Podhammer
: now there are a lot of Warhammer focused Podcasts around. I tried listening to them but It’s not for me..

Model Diorama Fail

Well, it’s all a bit wrong really but still made me laugh/ C’est un peu complètement raté sur toute la ligne mais ca m’a fait marrer quand même.

Ruined Mordheim Town House finished

I just finished this project last week end. The banister was a bit of hard work. I used Hirst Arts moulds for this but it requires lots of cleaning and very careful handling as it snaps very easily. I didn’t add too much rubble. What I’m planning of doing is including a small bag with random rubbles or pieces left over from the crafting for the client to decide where and how much he wants to use them. I couldn’t resist adding a few boxes and things though.

I really fancy painting it but I’m glad it’s going to a good home.

Styrofoam fire place

We all use or have used Styrofoam at some point for our boards, buildings, etc…but I think this guy went slightly over the top. My wife would kill me if I was to do something like this, however as I’m planning to retire one day in my donjon man-cave I think I’ll keep this idea somewhere in the back of my head.

I usually show the links of where I’ve found pictures or at least try to credit whoever is responsible for what I’m showing but this time I won’t. The original website I stumbled onto was full of adverts, really, really irritating, so that’ll just be the story of a guy hand crafting a fireplace with Styrofoam.

Dark Sword Painting Contest WIP

WAMP are organizing a painting contest sponsored by Dark Sword. I wasn’t planning on entering but while I was browsing their store I had a real “coup de Coeur” for the Frog Wizard. I don’t know what it is about him, maybe because it contains 2 of my lifelong passions: frogs and wizards.

Anyway, that’s what I’ll be entering. No chance of winning anything considering the level of painters on that forum but it is good fun and I like having deadlines: 27th June if anybody else is interested.

As it turns out I’m not the only one having a bit of a passion for frogs and wizards. Internet is full of it!!! I’ve done a bit of a photomontage for inspiration. On it, you can see the original miniature. I’ve removed the base (hard work on a metal mini) and the artefact he was holding in his right hand. I’ve replaced the artefact by a Bat-frog with Cyclops eye (technical name). If you look closely on the mini, you can see there is already one crawling on his right foot. The sculpting was a good practice.

For the base, I decided to do an all tiled thing, hence the removing of the original base. I’ll add a small fountain (the wizard picking the Bat-frog from it). The fountain is from WYRD and I’ve added a turtle in it (Turtles being the best friends of Bat-frogs: fact!). I also attempted to sculpt a small frog. It looks much exaggerated, big eyes and round; don’t know if I’ll keep it.

Now onto painting, I think I’m going to go for a dark blue skin type frog like the little one on the photomontage!!!

Microkosmic

As they put it on their website, Microkosmic is a webcomic in the tradition of fumetti (a genre of comics illustrated with photographs rather than drawings), or a photographic comic. There are plenty of great ones, just chose a few I liked.

They’re here:

http://www.microkosmic.com/
